Unionville Tavern, located in Hawthorne at 415 Commerce St., announced on Friday, March 10 that it would permanently close after serving customers for over 40 years, according to the business's staff.
The decision came after the death of owner Gordon Krueger of Ossining, age 78, on Friday, Jan. 13. The bar had originally decided to temporarily close after Krueger's death, which they had called a "profound loss," but then decided that the closure would be permanent.
The bar's staff said that a new proprietor would eventually take the reins of the location.
"The keys have been handed over, the doors will reopen in time, and we hope you will show the new proprietor the same support we were so humbled to receive," the bar's staff said in a post on social media.
Krueger, who was affectionately known as "Gordo," had been in the restaurant business for more than 50 years, and also owned establishments such as the Granite House, Colonial Tavern, Gordo’s, and The Red Schoolhouse in addition to the Unionville Tavern.
Several people expressed their fond memories of the tavern on social media.
"Spent so many countless days and hours there as a kid and young adult," said Craig G. of New York City.
Nancy A. of Hawthorne lamented the closure, saying, "A sad day in Hawthorne. So many memories in that building. If only those walls could talk."
